Understanding Inflammation:
Michelle Garland, CNP, gives us a run down on inflammation, the Endocannabinoid System, and how CBD fits into all of this.

“Over the years, inflammation has emerged as a potentially unifying theory behind disease. It’s something that everyone regularly experiences, whether they know it or not.

Inflammation comes in different forms. It can be external, resulting in uncomfortable symptoms or can be internal with no signs at all. From poor gut health to troubled skin and minor aches and pains to more serious chronic issues like arthritis and autoimmunity, there is increasing evidence that inflammation plays a significant role.

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is an immune response from the body to protect the affected location. It’s the body’s way of signalling the immune system to heal and repair damaged tissue, as well as defend itself against foreign invaders, such as viruses and bacteria.

There are Two Types of Inflammation

1) Short-term acute inflammation, which serves a purpose and can be beneficial to the body.
2) Long-term chronic inflammation, which can be detrimental to our health and can result in damaged tissues and lasting pain.

Acute Inflammation

Redness, swelling, pain, heat and immobility are a few symptoms we can experience when it comes to acute inflammation. These symptoms only apply to external manifestations, and would not be so obvious for anything going deeper within the body. For example, if you had inflammation within your organs such as the liver or lungs, you wouldn’t necessarily feel pain. This type of inflammation comes on quickly and doesn’t last long – think bronchitis, the cold or flu or a cut on the skin.

Chronic Inflammation

Fatigue, mouth sores, chest pain, abdominal pain, fever, rash, and joint pain are all symptoms of chronic inflammation. It develops slowly over time and can last for months or even years. Since the body cannot break down the pathogen, it remains in the system, and the result is tissue death or further thickening or scarring of the connective tissue. This often happens with autoimmune conditions such as asthma, arthritis or ulcerative colitis.

What’s CBD Have to do with inflammation?

While many of us are aware of the benefits of CBD when it comes to managing stress and anxiety, the science behind CBD’s ability to relieve pain is also remarkable. CBD can enhance and reduce the binding action of certain receptors in our endocannabinoid system. It specifically works on a molecule in the body called anandamide. This action has been shown to regulate the immune response by suppressing particular cells that play a role in inflammation and immunity, therefore, making CBD an excellent anti-inflammatory. It can help with in-the-moment pain, as well as the general healing process over time by working on the immune response and preventing further tissue damage.

Other Benefits of CBD

Reduces inflammation. As I mentioned above, it’s a potent anti-inflammatory. CBD integrates with the human body to help bring it back to balance faster, effectively reducing aches and pains from muscle tear and swelling.

Desensitizes nerve pain. Many athletes and those who do high-intensity workouts experience muscle aches from pushing themselves during training or nerve pain from overloading muscles to build greater strength and stamina. CBD works at the site of irritated nerve receptors by sending signals to the specific problem areas and prompts the body to balance itself out, reducing pain and speeding up muscle recovery.

Quickens muscle repair. Going hard during workouts can lead to muscle strain, dehydration, trauma or damage to nerves. CBD has antispasmodic properties and works with receptors present at the site of muscular synapses. In less scientific terms, this means CBD helps muscles to rest and relax, encouraging faster muscle repair, growth and strengthening.

My Personal Experience

As someone who works out six days a week, recovery is an important part of my daily routine. Sore muscles and back pain are some of the symptoms that I experience on the regular and believe me when I say I have tried EVERY natural cream on the market. Nothing has been more profound than FeelCBD’s Relief Stick. Why we Need to be Careful

With the tremendous growth of CBD products on the market, we must be careful with where we shop. It’s important to find a reputable brand whose formulas are safe and reliable. If you’ve been following my Instagram, you know I’ve been obsessing over a local Vancouver company called FeelCBD. I use many of their products on the regular and I couldn’t be happier with the results! If you are new to CBD and want to learn more – click here to read a blog post, I wrote all about the topic.
